Dispensaries: The Not-So Hidden Gems

We often speak about cannabis with beautiful, 'flowery' language. We talk about the most coveted 'crystals' that strains carry - but dispensaries are the real treasures we should be taking out hats off to. Dispensaries serve as a way for patients to gain safe access to medicine, and by proxy serves as a form of harm reduction for their communities.

Since dispensaries are more regulated than a street dealer, there are quite a few advantages to becoming a member at your chosen dispensary.

You can watch your budtender weigh out product for you, and you know exactly what you're paying for

In the world of cannabis, we still lay down to the imperial system, and therefore bud quantities are often referred to in increments of an ounce:

1/8 oz = 3.5 g
1/4 oz = 7 g
1/2 oz = 14 g

1 oz = 28 g

However, most reputable dispensaries will serve their patients any amount they require.

Not only do dispensaries give patients the liberty to see, smell, and choose from a variety strains, they are more generous in the quantities that they serve. Often dispensaries will go over the amount that the patient pays for, instead of trying to rip them off to make an extra buck - and you can watch your lovely budtender weigh it all out on a scale.

Dispensaries are consistent and often provide information to other helpful resources
One of the luxuries of being a member of a dispensary is that they offer consistent hours and a variety of products. The friendly staff should be able to provide you with any other resources you may require in regards to headshops, and sometimes community events and resources.

Products have clean packaging with health information and lab testing
Sometimes people scoff at the prices in dispensaries in comparison to the prices on the street. However, we believe that the prices are justified when you take into consideration the amount of work and testing it takes to make and sell a quality product. Dispensaries will invest in clean, discreet packaging for customers that will preserve their medicine for months or longer. They will also invest in lab testing, so their patients know what they are taking. Not to mention the actual physical labour and time it takes to grow and process cannabis, and the health precautions taken to preserve products (wearing gloves, not touching cannabis, sanitary storage, hair tied back, washing scales after use etc.)

That being said, pricing in dispensaries can be competitive to that on the street. The average amount for a gram of cannabis on the street is typically $10. Many dispensaries offer a variety of strains ranging between $5-$15 a gram. Plus, your budtender is a wiki of cannabis knowledge and will be able to assist you with any questions you may have.

Edibles: A How-To Guide

By now, I'm sure you've heard the wonderful news: UEM Victoria will now be offering edibles to its members online. Although, we're very excited that our members across Canada will have access to their medicine, it dawned on us that a little safety reminder when it comes to edibles is never a bad thing.
_____________________________________________________________________________

Here are few rules to adhere by when consuming any edibles.

1.When it comes to edibles, ALWAYS read the label to see the recommended dosage

You've been consuming cannabis for years and therefore you think you know everything there is to know about edibles; however, tolerance through smoking/vaporizing doesn't always translate to a tolerance for edibles. Your budtender should always explain to you how to consume any edibles you purchase. Should he/she forget, read the label to see what the dosage and the THC content. If you're unaware of the amount of THC, ask your trusted budtender.

2. Medicate and Wait

10 mg is the standard dose of THC, but when it's digested in the liver, it is converted to a stronger form of THC that gives double the effects in comparison to smoking. Where the effects are felt immediately when smoking, it can take between 30 to 60 minutes to feel the effect with edibles, and can last between 4-12 hours.

3.Paranoia is just around the corner

Some of us may be a little overzealous when it comes to edibles, this why we're gonna let you in on a little secret: CBD capsules! You've had too much and now you're feeling the paranoia and panicky feelings coming on. Take a CBD capsule. CBD counteracts the effects of THC and will help dissipate the paranoid feelings. We recommend purchasing them whenever you purchase any edibles.

Edibles are a great way to medicate, especially for those who choose not to smoke or vape. Edibles also provide a great way to manage pain for a lengthy period of time. Just like any medication, make sure you read the labels and that you use them responsibly.

Legalization Vs. Decriminalization

You've seen and heard the good news: Marijuana is very close to being legalized. The Powers that be decided to make the announcement on 4/20. Most cannabis users in Canada rejoiced. But before we can break out the champagne: How close are we really to Cannabis being legal and will the Conservatives try to impede this positive step? The Liberals want to legalize it, the New Democrats want to decriminalize it and the Conservatives want everybody in jail! With so many great options, where does it leave the average Canadian who is not familiar with all the double-talk? To our very informative blog, of course. We wouldn't be your friendly neighborhood dispensary if we didn't keep you "in the know" with all things relating to Cannabis.

Legalization

We've seen the gold rush that's been happening in the United States. Colorado reached over $100 million dollars in tax revenue in 2015. Nothing to sneer at, but all that was possible with the legalization of Cannabis. Which means for the very fortunate people of Colorado, better infrastructures such as hospital and schools and more revenue for their state to spend on its citizens. What this could mean to us; possibly a lowering of the astronomical cost of life in BC, especially since most of the dispensaries in Canada are found in our beautiful province.

Decriminalization

We all have a friend who has been arrested for possession of Marijuana and we know a few that have actually been convicted of it. Decriminalization does not need as much planning and preparedness as legalization. It's something that could be done right away and would not require a "special council" of any kind. But the trouble with decriminalization is that it could be become a cash grab for many provincial governments since they would 'regulate' by issuing fines. Another issue, is that once you've been given a citation or fine, there will still be a record entered in the system associating your name and Marijuana. These are records that can be found during a background check, if say, Customs decides to verify your identity.

We could debate the pros and cons of this highly contentious subject, but at the end of the day it is up to us Cannabis consumers to let our politicians know that the time has come to let adults make their own decisions when it comes to their own health and that the time for action is now.
