The Science Behind Marijuana and The Munchies!

People often make light of the fact that ‪#‎cannabis‬ is a wildly ‪#‎effective‬‪#‎appetite‬ ‪#‎stimulant‬. What is often referred to as "the ‪#‎munchies‬" is actually a complex little bit of ‪#‎science‬. These benefts are a leading reason why those afflicted by disease induced ‪#‎Anorexia‬ often turn to cannabis to aid in ‪#‎AppetiteStimulation‬.
Cannabis increases appetite for ‪#‎patients‬ who have trouble ‪#‎eating‬. This has less to do with the ‪#‎stomach‬ and more to do with the ‪#‎brain‬. When you‪#‎eat‬ and become full, your ‪#‎body‬ produces an #appetite-suppressing‪#‎hormone‬ called ‪#‎leptin‬! Leptin binds to ‪#‎cannabinoid‬ ‪#‎receptors‬ in the brain to alert you to stop eating. When you ingest ‪#‎marijuana‬ and ‪#‎THC‬reaches the brain, it binds to those same cannabinoid receptors and blocks the leptin, removing the communication from your stomach to your brain telling you to stop eating.

A new ‪#‎study‬ published in ‪#‎Nature‬ Neuroscience provides another angle to this query. A group of European ‪#‎neuroscientists‬ found that in mice, THC fits into receptors in the brain's ‪#‎olfactory‬ system, this greatly impacts the mice by drastically increasing the animals' ability to smell food and leading to them eating more! So basically, another benefit is that cannabis makes ‪#‎food‬ more ‪#‎appealing‬, this is what aids in those with #anorexia due to ‪#‎nausea‬ (often a side effect of ‪#‎pharmaceuticals‬ and #disease)
THC appears to increase our #sensitivity to #scents and #flavors by using naturally occurring neural networks to convince the brain that it's starving, and that food is awesome and tasty.
